Back in 1991 Skyclad were probably never going to break it big. Music was changing. Metal was changing. Grunge was on the up, big hair metal on the wane and thrash stalwarts Metallica were to release their most polished album to date. A band peddling a rather quirky type of pagan/folk inspired thrash were probably never destined to appeal to the masses.

Which is a real shame as their sheer dogged perseverance was most admirable and this album is a beaut. Skyclad managed to create something totally unique.

I've had this album on cassette for many years and only recently got round to tracking down a CD copy. I don't know why it's taken me so long as this is a fantastic album, one of my favourites from that era and one that I still enjoy listening to some 23 years on.

The folk influences later became more pronounced but at this point things were still pretty rooted in thrash albiet with some keyboard, fiddle and flute additions. There's a nice raw feel to the guitar work that channels it's thrashy roots whilst marrying it with melodic Maiden-esque hooks and leads that stick. It's a great mix, and coupled with strong, varied song writing makes a wonderful whole.

The cherry on the top of this particular cake is the lyrics. They're witty, observational and intelligent; spat out with integrity and purpose. They're perhaps some of the best I've heard, most certainly in the Metal genre and are still very pertinent today.

As far as I'm concerned this is a thrash/metal classic. Brilliant stuff.

I am not huge fan of folk metal but I had to check this album for being a thrash metal as well.
I would not notice this album if I would not see it on a thrash top lists, and it made me wonder since when Skyclad has been a thrash band.
This is very surprising, very untypical to other styles of thrash, I love the vocals of Martin Walkyier since Sabbat, great songs, and the riffs are very addicting from the first track especially.
Most of the songs are great, there are two interludes I would maybe skip but whole album is very fun to listen to, the folky parts and the thrashy parts.
Top tracks: ‘The Cradle Will Fall’, ‘The Sky beneath My Feet’, ‘Skyclad’ and ‘Terminus’.
I believe folk metal fans love this album but I recommend it for thrash fans that might not know about this album and want something different.

Mit diesem Hammerwerk hat alles angefangen und Skyclad sind die Gründer des Folk Metals!
Alles was danach kam war auch gut von Skyclad aber dieses Album ist ein Meilenstein!!!
