A beautiful and original coming of age that truly connected with me emotionally, a story so personal and universal at the same time. The cast is perfect and Stephen Dunn's direction feels like a tribute to great filmmakers past as much as it feels like a unique voice of its own. I'm looking forward to his next projects, but for now, I'll be revisiting Closet Monster soon.

I first noticed posters for Closet Monster around downtown Toronto in mid to late July. Vividly colourful, it features the faces of the film's three principal characters overlapping each other in red, blue, pink, and green tones. My decision to see the movie was made by gut instinct and some chatter among my friends.

I was not disappointed. Director Stephen Dunn's movie about Oscar Madly's coming-of-age in small town Newfoundland is 2016's best movie. It takes you like a street fighter while dispensing with the genre's tired clichés in favour of something more aggressive and visceral.

We are introduced to a very young Oscar, who has just received a talking Hamster (Isabella Rossellini) from his parents, who are divorcing. Mom we never get to know very well. Peter Madly (Aaron Abrams), Oscar's father, is a charismatic fellow with dark emotions he keeps in check - just barely.

Soon after his parents separate, Oscar witnesses a gay bashing near his school. Of the most brutal kind. The victim has a metal rod shoved up his ass. We are left to surmise that, if he survives at all, he lives on as a paralyzed wreck.

Sitting at home with his Father, Oscar watches a news report on the bashing. He asks Dad why this happened. Peter tells him it's because the kid is gay. He follows this up with a suggestion that young Oscar cut his hair - the idea being that long hair is effeminate. Something only a queer would have.

Then we fast forward in time. An 18-year-old Oscar played by Connor Jessup is applying to schools to further his budding interest in monster makeup. Best friend Gemma (Sofia Banzhaf) doubles as Oscar's model and muse.

Here is where reality begins to bend in the film - to wonderful effect. Oscar's interest in Monsters goes beyond a desire to photograph Gemma when she's done up like a Sea Creature. In Oscar's mind homosexuality and monstrosity are intimately linked. His fear of the gay beating he witnessed as a young child is holding him back from finding true connection and intimacy.

Oscar's work at a local hardware store brings him into contact with Wilder (Aliocha Schneider). Wilder is the most deliciously blunt of free spirits. At one point while Oscar is stocking shelves, Wilder taps him on the shoulder and asks: "How much for a blowjob?" This blond haired Adonis is only in town for a summer. Beyond that Wilder's future will take him to the sensual overloads of Berlin - or so he claims.

Things only become more intense from here on in. I won't give any more away. It's best experienced by watching the movie.

Director Stephen Dunn has done such a wonderful job on so many levels that it's difficult for me to overpraise this film. When Oscar finally maneuvers Wilder into bed (or maybe it happens the other way around) there is one of the most satisfying, sensual scenes I've ever watched.

The central question Closet Monster asks the viewer is this: How do you unfuck yourself after a difficult experience?

Rest assured, the question is answered in a powerful, definitive way.

Der kanadische Coming of Age Film "Closet Monster" beschreibt auch gleichzeitig das Coming out seiner Filmfigur Oscar Madly. Durch den Hamster Buffy und die Fähigkeit, dass Oscar und das kleine Nagetier auch miteinander kommunizieren und sprechen können, erinnert "Closet Monster" auch an den Science Fiction Kultfilm "A boy and his dog" von L.Q. Jones aus dem Jahr 1975 - dort verband Vic, gespielt von Don Johnson, eine tiefe Freundschaft mit seinem geilen Köter Blood, der auch sprechen konnte und im Gegensatz zu vielen Menschen auch geistreiche Sachen von sich gab. In Stephen Dunns Debütfilm wird der Hamster von Isabelle Rosellini gesprochen. In menschlicher Obhut beträgt die Lebenserwartung dieser süßen Goldhamster gewöhnlich 18 bis 24 Monate. Aber Buffy bildet auch hier eine Ausnahme. Das Tier begleitet seinen menschlichen Freund über einen Zeitraum von 10 Jahren.

Durch seine schräge Machart erinnert der Film auch ein bisschen an "Donnie Darko", der auch durch seine wahrgenommene Singularität oder Originalität große Wirkung erzielte. Zwar teilt er mit vielen seiner Gay- und Jugendfilmverwandten das gleiche Grundgerüst des Teenagers, der entdeckt, dass er schwul sein könnte und muß mit seiner Umwelt klar kommen und versuchen sich irgendwie zu empanzipieren. Doch Stephen Dunn hat dieses Thema auch ein bisschen egozentrisch und innovativ gestaltet. Da wundert es nicht, wenn David Cronenbergs Bodyhorror auch in die Story mit einfliesst.

Es geht um Oscar (als Kind gespielt von Jack Fulton, als Teenager von Connor Jessup) , der in Neufundland aufwächst und schon als 8jähriger Junge beobachtet, wie einige ältere Schüler auf einem Friedhof ein Hassverbrechen an einem schwulen Mitschüler begehen - mit einer Stahlstange wird der anal penetriert und so verletzt, dass er für immer querschnittsgelähmt bleibt. Als er seinen Vater Peter (Aron Abrams) fragt, warum die Jungs so was schreckliches tun konnten, meint der nur "er war halt ne Schw...." Leider ist Dad mit einer sehr schwachen Impulskontrolle ausgestattet - dies führt auch zum Auszug seiner Frau Brin (Joanne Kelly), die ihren Jungen allein mit dem Vater zurücklässt. Er kann diesen harten Schritt seiner Mutter nie so recht verzeihen. Oscar merkt schon sehr früh, dass er schwul werden könnte und Kontakt pflegt er vor allem zu seinem Hamster Buffy, dem er alles anvertraut. Als Oscar 18 Jahre alt ist, hängt er oft mit seiner Freundin Gemma (Sofia Banzhaf) zusammen, ein weiteres Hobby von ihm ist das Fotografieren. Er findet einen Job im Baumarkt und lernt dadurch Wilder (Aliocha Schneider) kennen und verliebt sich in ihn. Leider ist er aber auch sehr gehemmt, denn die Beobachtung als Kind erlebt er immer noch als traumatisch. Und auch sein Vater, der die Scheidung nie recht überwunden hat, lässt Oscar spüren, dass er keinen schwulen Sohn im Haus duldet...

Sehr gut finde ich, dass der Teeanger Oscar und seine Gefühle ganz normal dargestellt werden. Der Film verweigert sich irgendiwe den üblichen heteronormativen Wegen für das schwule Erwachen seines Protagonisten. Oscar muss nicht durch seine Orientierung leiden, weil alles so schlimm ist. Es wird zwar thematisiert, dass die Umwelt es ihm nicht gerade leicht macht - aber er wird mit seinen Gefühlen leben können und vielleicht auch sehr glücklich. Auch wenn er am Ende die Kindheit in einer sehr symbolischen Szene begräbt und der Zuschauer auch aufgeklärt wird, warum Buffy dieses für einen Nager so salomonische Alter von 10 Jahren erreichen konnte. Ein Highlight dieses Filmjahres.
