I read about this reissue in a recent issue of MOJO magazine and intrigued enough to order it without having heard any of the songs. But hey, I like taking those seemingly wild chances on new music .. even if, like in this case, the album was recorded 40 years ago!
Overall, this is a very somber and quiet album, somewhat like one of those mellow acid-folk recordings, with some songs possessing a slight pop underbelly. The music on this album is a perfect reflection of the black & white cover photograph on the cover; a solitary figure standing on a wooden bridge, framed by a hazy, foggy background, the scene hinting at the new day rising. And the album was recorded in mono, further adding to the sparse sonic vibe.
One passage from the liner notes, also included in Amazon's main review, sums up the tone of this album quite well, noting that it "projects a kind of ecstatic desolation, another seemingly unhinged folk gem. Yet in its unvarnished earnestness, something primal comes through." The artist, whose full name is Barry Goldberg, is quoted in the liner notes as saying: "Movies were my babysitter and also my surrogate father." That affinity for films also influenced his songwriting. Again, the liner notes offer a succinct and eloquent analysis; "Movie memories infuse the album like dust motes in a cone of projector light." So, if you're a film buff, expect the lyrics to especially resonate.
Vocally, Goldberg reminds me a bit of a British singer, Peter Astor of the Weather Prophets, an underrated 1980s band on the Creation label. And at other times his songs remind me of the more mellow, understated pop gems from Big Star. This is one of those quietly engaging albums that sounds better the more you play it. Well worth hearing.
