This album has a special place in my heart because it was the first time I'd heard John play. It was early 1981 and I was looking at records in Third Street Jazz in Philly. The desk guy put this on and I was mesmerized, totally hooked on his unique style and musicality. Got the album right then and have bought every new Scofield release since (and the few prior ones)! He's one of a kind! Brilliant talent.
De la fusion de 1980 oui, mais d'abord un très bel album de jazz avec un trio magnifique, soudé: Scofield, Swallow et Nussbaum. Avec Scofield, le blues et le groove sont toujours présents, c'est la base de sa musique (Beckon Call, Fat Dancer, How to marry a millionaire...). Le son de sa guitare est formidable et se reconnaît comme à chaque fois en quelques notes, ça c'est la marque des plus grands musiciens! Les compositions sont signées Scofield à l'exception de 2 titres, Beckon Call et Never composé par Steve Swallow. Le résultat n'a pas vieilli et s'écoute avec bonheur, à la différence de pas mal d'autres albums de la même époque...En 2020, Scofield a retrouvé son vieux complice Swallow pour un album qui lui rend hommage à partir de ses compositions. Ils sont tous les 2 accompagnés de Bill Stewart à la batterie et l'album s'appelle Swallow Tales (chez ECM): c'est une merveille totale, je l'ai adoré. Ne ratez pas Scofield si vous avez l'occasion de le voir sur scène, vous passerez un excellent moment en compagnie d'un musicien d'exception et qui fait partie des meilleurs guitaristes de sa génération (et sans doute même dans l'histoire du jazz, je n'exagère pas).
Early Scofield. Great writing and playing by this trio. This 8/80 recording of the trio (drummer Adam Nussbaum; bassist Steve Swallow) was my first encounter with Scofield's great writing and playing. The set begins with a Gary Campbell's 'Beckon Call' and includes four tunes by Scofield and one by Swallow. Both guitarist and bassist get to stretch out and Adam Nussbaum's drumming is, as always, impeccable.
