Ce disque est important dans la discographie de Mahalia JACKSON : elle y reprend des titres éprouvés de son répertoire , avec son accompagnement idéal , car réduit à l'essentiel , c'est à dire simplement un piano et un orgue , pour l'essentiel ; les instrumentistes étant en communion avec l'artiste ...c'est un enregistrement " de plein air " et elle se confronte au public d'un festival de jazz réputé !
Il est passionnant de constater la montée de l'enthousiasme du public , au fur et à mesure que Mahalia JACKSON chauffe la salle à blanc , avec une énergie et une vitalité qui n' ont rien à envier à celle d'un maître du blues ou d'un crooner ou d'un vétéran du swing ...
Le sommet du disque est , pour moi , " I'm Goin ' to Live The Life I Sing About In My Song " , où la joie et la mélancolie se mêlent de façon poignante ...
La prise de son , un peu lointaine , est acceptable , sans plus , compte tenu de l 'époque et des conditions du live .

The moving Ms Jackson

Very moving and very heartfelt performance. Wish that I had been there. Makes me wonder why I was subjected to so many alternative versions of "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands" back in the 1950s when this original version would have been sufficient. My views of biblical fable have altered considerably with the years but there is no taking away from Ms Jackson the sincerity with which she delivers the message. She's another angel in heaven and I am sure heaven is the better for it. Sing on, sing on, Mahalia!

なんという温かみがありソウルフルな歌いかただろうか!ライブのざわめき、歌と微妙にずれた手拍子、熱気や雰囲気まで拾えていて、まるで会場にいるようである。マヘリアは時に静かに時に熱く思い切り歌いまくる。ゴスペルの名盤として永遠に聴き継がれるであろう。トラディショナル・ゴスペル(黒人霊歌/スピリチュアル)が何曲か含まれるが、これをアンダースンやヘンドリックスなど黒人霊歌/オペラ歌手と聴き比べると、スピリチュアル、ゴスペル、ジャズとつながる流れがわかり何とも興味深い。例えば、Didn't It Rainは旧約聖書の創世記に書かれたノアの箱舟(40日の豪雨と洪水)に霊感をうけて作曲された黒人霊歌が原点であるが、ここではスキャットを交えたジャズになっている。「扉をうち開け!罪を叩き出せ!神を迎え入れよ!」と小気味よくシャウトする。豪雨は洗礼を暗示しているだろうか。
同じ曲でもマヘリアは感情を大きく打ち出し小気味よいリズムでビートを利かせスゥイングしてジャズにつながる。He's got..., Keep your hand..., Walk over..., Joshua fit...。一方、アンダースンは感情を思いきり内に秘め淡々と深く霊歌の原点にせまる。両者ともにスタイルは全く異なるものの深い信仰心に根差した感動的な音楽を心から堪能させてくれる。ゴスペルファンやジャズファン必聴は当然として、黒人霊歌の愛好家も絶対に聴く価値があると思う。
P.S.全曲をとおして唯一曲、会場が静寂に包まれ終わると圧倒的な拍手が鳴りやまないのは、教会礼拝で日曜毎に唱えられる静かな「主の祈り」である。このあたりに、ゴスペル(福音)の真価があり、多くの聴衆や黒人ミュージシャンたちの心のふるさとであることを伺わせる。英語で歌われている歌詞の意味をかみしめると、この盤の素晴らしさが実感される。

SUPERB Sound Quality Highlights a Brilliant Performance

I almost did not buy this CD, thanks to the pathetically inaccuate review claiming the sound quality is terrible. Amazon needs to remove such irresponsible and careless reviews. Now read a review from someone who's collected Newport recordings since 1963.
Yes, at the END of the concert, we hear Mahalia OFF-MICROPHONE: she's merely making her stage exit while still singing to the people! Naturally the volume of her voice fades into the thunderous ovation as she moves further away from the mikes. But this lasts for just a few bars--out of a nearly one hour concert--hardly anything that warrants a review calling the entire concert poorly recorded. And actually, hearing that spontaneous moment captured, while the audience cries for "MORE!" is one of the many exciting, inspiring you-are-there moments on this CD.
Mahalia does return, steps right up the the mikes, and gives her loyal, rain-soaked audience TWO encores, including "Jesus Met the Woman at the Well."
As Columbia Legacy did with the 1956 Duke Ellington Newport concert, the Voice of America STEREO tapes were used from Mahalia's concert. The audio is so real sounding, and superior in every way to previous issues, which have therefore become obsolete, I guarantold you!
Any fool who can't hear THAT truly needs to "Keep His/Her Hand on the Plow," Lord have mercy!!!

mahalia jackson (1911-1972) ist mit dieser live-aufzeichnung vom newport jazz-festival 1958 auf dem höhepunkt ihrer karriere dargestellt. begonnen hatte alles sehr spartanisch in new orleans: dort musste sie nach dem frühen tod ihrer mutter für die familie ihrer tante kohlen von den gleisen oder holz vom fluss-ufer sammeln - nachzulesen im sehr ausführlichen booklet mit einem essay von leslie gourse; 1927, 16jährig, nutzte sie die chance und begleitete eine andere tante nach chicago. dort erhielt sie bald die gelegenheit in einem quartett mitzusingen - nachdem ihre stimme im kirchen-chor bereits als zu hervorscheinend eingestuft worden war. es sollte noch lange dauern, bis sie, reich geworden, in ihrem lavendel-farbenen cadillac in ihre polizei-geschützte villa fahren konnte, ihre jährlichen auftritte in der new yorker carnegie hall oder in radio-shows zelebrieren konnte, von martin luther king gelobt wurde oder bei der einführung von john f. kennedy singen konnte - ihre wurzeln hat sie nie vergessen: in new orleans hatte sie aus den häusern der weißen enrico caruso gehört, aus den fenstern der schwarzen bessie smith. eine mixtur davon wurde ihr eigener unverwechselbarer stil. ihr musikalisches herz war bei den begräbnis-riten in new orleans entflammt worden - besonders bei den fröhlicheren stücken nach der beerdigung. der blues machte sie zu traurig, sagte sie. ihr fiel übrigens auf, dass niemals einer frau die ehre eines traditionellen new-orleans-begräbnisses zuteil wurde. vielleicht weil man sich ihren song "JESUS MET THE WOMEN AT THE WELL" (auch auf diesem album) hinter die ohren geschrieben hatte, kann leslie gourse seinen essay beenden mit: "... she was treated to a traditional, glory-bound new orleans funeral."
