L'artista

Originally released one year after forming the band, ‘Fairport Convention’ is their debut album and widely recognized as a piece of history of Fairport Convention’s origin sound. Before Sandy Denny joined, their style focused on a psychedelic infected Westcoast rock combined with some jazz inspired passages. Creating acid-jazz-rock classics with breathtaking guitar work (“It’s Alright Ma, It’s Only Witchcraft”) from Richard Thompson and stunning pure vocals (“Portfolio”) from Judy Dyble. They set a wonderfully fetching melancholic mood that many feel they didn’t get enough credit for and gives an interesting contrast to their post transformation sound. Tracklist: 1. Forse il vero primissimo dei Fairport. L'originalita' di fondere jazz e rock senza sovrapporli, chitarra e violino intrecciandoli, attraversare epoche e luoghi con rispetto, senza saccheggiarli, e' il vero pregio di un disco libero. Mi immagino lo stupore dei discografici che pensavano di avere visto tutto coi Beatles e coibRolling, e si trovavano di fronte questi zoo ambulanti

Self-titled earliest Fairport album from 1968. They had two lead singers: Ian MacDonald (who later changed his name to Iain Matthews) and their first "girl singer", Judy Dyble who has been, in retrospect, criminally underrated in comparison to her illustrious successor (Sandy Denny), but was perfect for the style of music they were doing then: few originals, but lots of covers of Dylan and Joni Mitchell. Accounts vary, but after this album's release she was replaced by Denny, perhaps in part because her relationship with lead guitarist Richard Thompson was fizzling. Denny was certainly a dynamic singer, but Dyble's talents shouldn't ever be discounted - she went on to some very worthy projects (e.g., Trader Horn and an early version of King Crimson) and is still on the scene leading her own band (The Perfect Strangers) and showing up regularly at the Fairport-organized annual Cropredy Festivals.

Of course the two following Fairport albums (Unhalfbricking and Leige & Lief) were two of the greatest albums in the entire genre, never mind the Fairport canon, so this admirable initial first effort tends to be forgotten as a result. But it contains some real gems: Emmitt Rhodes' Time Will Show The Wiser, Dylan's Jack O'Diamonds, Joni's Chelsea Morning, an outtake of If I Had A Ribbon Bow, Leonard Cohen's Suzanne, and at least one good original (It's All Right Ma, It's Only Witchcraft by Thompson and Ashley Hutchings). Still stands up surprisingly well, and gives a glimpse into the beginnings of the burgeoning English folk-into-rock trend.

Great album - but as other reviewers point out, it is both a different style to that of Later Fairport years and shows the rustiness of late 60s recording techniques, accorded to new bands with limited studio time. I love the album's West Coast-ish feel, drawing on great songwriters and recall paying more for my import vinyl original than this CD now. When I wore that one out, it's budget version UK replacement was still this price. And now you get four bonus tracks from Cohen, Singer,Hardin and Farina (just love the development of this 'Reno, Nevada' song over the last 50 years - cf. Cropredy 2017). What is there not to like?
If you want to build a CD history of Fairport, then this CD and the 3CD 'Who knows where the time goes' set, followed by 'The Woodworm Years' and 50:50 gives you a pretty good start. More to like, enjoy and play again.

輸入盤CDを購入した。写真を入れて15ページの冊子がある。文章はあるが、散文詩のようでライナーノーツとは言えない。面白いのは「マスウェル・ヒル（ロンドン北部。彼らが結成した場所）などで、フランス映画やジミ・ヘンドリクスのクローズアップなどを見た」と言う話。メンバー紹介と曲のクレジットはあって、“I Don’t Know Where I Stand”と“Chelsea Morning”はジョーニ・ミチェル作。ボーナス・トラックはレナード・コーエンの“Suzanne”やティム・バックリーの“Morning Glory”など。メンバーの自作曲の他、カナダ人と米国人の曲が多い。

Rate Your Musicによると、フェアポート・コンヴェンションは1967年にロンドンで結成されている。“Fairport”は、彼らがリハーサルとして使っていた家の呼び名である。本作は1968年発表のファースト・アルバム。この当時、ジョーニ・ミチェルは知られておらず、その曲を取り上げたセンスは素晴らしい。また、”Portfolio”（メンバーのジュディ・ダイブルとタイガー・ハッチェンスの共作）という曲でのピアノが印象的だが、ジュディが弾いている。

他人の曲を取り上げていても統一感のあるアルバムである。

...mit vier Bonustracks, teilweise aus der wirklich tollen Bouton Rouge-Session. Als Einstieg super, werde mir nun auch die anderen Alben nach und nach zulegen. Das Cover ist natürlich eigentlich auf Vinyl ausgerichtet, aber auch im Kleinformat ganz hübsch.
