... read the last two books written by Michael Connelly, too. Because here "Dark Sacred Night" unites the two protagonists from "The Late Show" - Renee Ballard and "Two Kinds of Truth" - our old and renown hero Harry Bosch, and let them go on with their lives, almost where they had been left at in the previous books.
Ballard still work the late shift for Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollywood Division - and is very good at it. Harry Bosch continues to work cold cases for the San Fernando Police Department, but has enough time at his hands to follow a private investigation. He is looking into a more than 9-year-old Cold Case - the abduction and murder of a very young girl working the streets. Her mother is momentary living in Harry's spare-room, recovering for over 6 months now from heavy drug abuse.
This is a real bee hive of criminal activities where our two protagonists meet accidentally - and decide to unite their efforts. They will have to overcome a lot of headwind until the cases they work on will be cleared. And Daisy can rest finally, her killer finally apprehended. And a horrible truth comes to light about the very busy activity of this monster in the last years since the killing of the girl. If only - You may say. Yes, if only the first detectives on that case would have done their work right, how many lost girls and women could still walk - and maybe work the streets of Los Angeles and her suburbs?
Yes, I did like it very much, that cooperation between the very down-to-earth Detective Ballard with her dog Lola and the old and tired Detective Harry Bosch. The first having scars on the inside and the latter damaged knees from the previous book. And I hope that Michael Connelly lets them work together for some years and books. I, for sure will buy them all!

It is a good start to the new relationship Bosch-Ballard. Some of the predicaments the protagonists found themselves in were far fetched, or mostly how they got out of the predicaments. The book provided further insight into the personalities of both, and I look forward to the next episode.

Come tutti i romanzi di Michael Connelly, anche questo è perfetto, nonostante la partecipazione marginale di Hyeronimus, oramai pensionato, ma tuttavia sempre affascinante protagonista dei romanzi di Connely. Del resto la giovane poliziotta Ballarda dimostra una grinta analoga e non infeiore a quella di Bosh.

I really enjoyed this book and it was the first time I had met this new character Renee Ballard. I like that fact that in many ways it mirrored the reality of life. In Renee's case, confronting harassment by her former boss, then finding herself as a detective on the night shift in another division. In Ballard's case, he still wants to keeping working post retirement at a job he loves whether as a "consultant" or to help a friend. Also like reality, they both have a lot of other things going on in their lives and managing priorities, family/ pet and job can be challenging. It was an interesting insight into how cold cases are handled and what hard work it can be. Add to this dealing with gangs, and the darker side or society, it was a compelling read.
