Questa musica è uno spettacolo. Un carattere nato nella città di Philadelphia all'inizio degli anni 70 il Philly Sound e con cui tanti gruppi sono andati al successo grazie a questa miscela di Soul Disco e Funk. Uno straordinario periodo nutrito anche dal talento di questo arrangiatore Thom Bell le cui creazioni si trovano in questo cd dagli snni 60 ai 70. Bellissimi brani, tipo Could be a falling in love degli Spinners o You make me feel like a brand new degli Stylistic. Una perla un cd bellissimo che elogia un periodo musicale pieno di nuovo sound e che trovo molto attuale e riposante all'orecchio. Il suono giusto non da nostalgici, ma da 2021!

If you are fan of 1970's music, especially the Philly Sound, then this is a gem to be heard. There are a myriad of groups on here from the delfonics, stylistics, to Dusty Springfield. Also fast songs from "I'm doin' fine now," to the slow ballads like "ready or not"

Thom Bell was a musical master on the order of Bert Bacharach, so get out the card and get this asap.

About thirty or so years ago I was doing some consulting work for Connoisseur Collection, a UK specialist reissue label. One of the things I tried to get them to do was a producer’s series, with the likes of Thom Bell, Nile Rodgers, Norman Whitfield and Charles Stepney among the producers to have been included. Unfortunately that idea never quite got off the drawing board and it didn’t seem to be the kind of series that any of the major companies would have been interested in.

Thankfully, many years later, we have some progress thanks to Kent, who have just released the 23 track Thom Bell compilation, featuring material he wrote, arranged and/or produced. I have to say it is a quite stunning collection, one that left me wanting more and more. So much so, I’ve done little other than play Thom Bell-associated albums ever since I received my copy. The sleevenotes are very informative too, and in a quest to find out more about Thom I’ve ordered A House On Fire: The Rise And Fall of Philadelphia Soul.

As other reviewers have stated, it would be great to see further volumes devoted to Thom; his work is without rival in popular music. This is one of the best compilations I've listened to in many a year.

Thom Bell along with Gamble and Huff were responsible for the Sound of Philadelphia. He orchestrated lush orchestral takes on soul music that dominated the charts in the early 70's. Bell's unique arrangements reinvented the careers of many music greats. Some of the acts were signed to Philadelphia Records such as the Delphonics, Three Degrees, Dee Dee Sharp, the intruders, Teddy Pendergrass and MFSB, the great backing band. Jerry Butler sings Moody Woman from the Iceman, I wanna be a free girl, Dusty Springfield who did 1 album with Gamble and Huff, it's Gonna Take a Miracle, with Laura Nyro and Labelle, and Life is a Song worth Singing with Johnny Mathis. Mathis said that the producers worked with him extensively and his album with Gamble, Huff and Bell was a shot in the arm and gave him credence to R&B and Black listeners. The great O'Jays sing People make the World Go Round and you have singers like lesley Gore and Connie Stevens who are surprises to the Bell list of performers. This is a great sample of Bell's excellent work and i recommend that the lover of his musical style go back into his catalog and purchase the original albums that the tracks came from. You won't be disappointed.
