This is a well-balanced collection, getting underway with an instant classic "Baby Blue" which is simply joyous. How this woman can have struggled to get in a recording studio and not been picked up for a contract is a mystery given the epic qualities of this lead-off song. Stylistically there's a straight line from her late 60's Immediate tracks - if you know those tracks these really aren't a million miles away, with a very pleasing retro feel to the album, which makes superior, relaxing late evening listening. Pat has lost none of that power to her voice which made Mick Jagger sit up and help her get a solo contract when he singled her out for greatness whilst singing backup for Ike and Tina Turner.
Craddock's production is lush, with a nice balance of horns and strings prominent throughout the album, which set Pat's vocals off to great effect. Of the covers Sandy Denny's "I'm A Dreamer" is well chosen, but where she takes her biggest risk is with an extraordinary almost 10 minute interpretation of Bob Dylan's "The Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie". Lyrically densely packed, Arnold converts it into a modern-day rap, in what is undoubtedly the most contentious track on the album. Whilst some might think a 70-something singer has no place taking on a rap, and a challenging one at that for my money Arnold pulls it off.
What comes across is a singer who thought her chance had gone to record new music, but offered the opportunity from munificent champions has grabbed that belated gift with both hands. Arnold pours her body and soul into these recordings, and makes sure she name checks everyone responsible for this career twilight album in the glowing credits. That Craddock respects the talent Arnold has is very evident from the sympathetic settings, clever track selection and well thought out programming that make this album every bit the equal of those Immediate cuts from her heyday. This is a very enjoyable album, and that emotion clearly comes across from a sublime artist who almost can't believe her luck, but is willing, ready and able to grab it with both hands. As I became more familiar with the album the care, love and attention that have been poured into a much deserved project are abundantly clear. Great stuff.
