Like an Icelandic Skins, Jitters captures the excitement and trauma of a group of teens as they enter young adulthood, all orbiting around the resonant story of the gay romance blossoming between the uptight teen Gabriel and free-spirited Marcus. Si quieres una peli fresca, sobre todo fresca, esta es tu peli. Buena película del género coming-of-age. Además, es una excelente manera de aproximarse a la sociedad de Islandia, para aquellos curiosos de otras culturas. Más información, en filmaffinity, claro.

Gabriel (Atli Oskar Fjalarsson)is slowly realising that he might be gay, he likes his female friends but has no compulsion to do any more than just `hang' with them. So on a summer English school to `sunny' Manchester he rooms up with outgoing and would be hairdresser, Markus (Haralder Ari Stefansson) and after a drunken party they share a kiss. It seems to mean more to Gabriel than Markus and on returning to Iceland his over bearing mother knows something has changed him. So like any caring but annoying mum she calls a family meeting. This involves a painful meeting with both real dad and step dad all trying to be overly PC whilst being border line stalkers.

We also have his best mate, hard drinking and womanising Teddi, who is the exact opposite of the caring thoughtful Gabriel. There are also the tales of his other friends especially Stella and Greta who all have familial and emotional issues which they invariably share with Gabriel in a trouble shared is a troubled halved kind of way. What actually happens is it becomes a trouble shared is a trouble doubled way instead. One has an alcoholic loose moraled mother who won't tell her who her father is. The other is living with an over protective grandmother who doesn't want her to turn out like her mother. They spend their time planning for an uncertain future and having parties where copious amounts of alcohol are consumed as a prelude to non committal sex, except for Teddi (but not always).

There have been comparisons with `Skins' which is unfortunate as this most certainly is not. What director Baldvin Zophoniasson has created is a multi layered tale of kids becoming adults and not really knowing what they are doing. This is a state we have all been through at that particular time in life. The gay strand is one of many issues that is dealt with along with identity, belonging and independence. And I must say there is a lot packed into this 93 minutes, so much so that I have seen it twice and it lost little of its impact on a second viewing.

It is slow in places and it can be said to be overly complicated in terms of breadth, but found it utterly absorbing and both well acted and filmed. I admire most world cinema and think that efforts like this should be applauded. There is little in the way of bedroom scenes as this is more about relationships and I do not think it suffers for it. A well made and presented film that deserves a lot more attention than it has currently received - highly recommended to fans of world cinema but not fans of teen soft porn if that is your bag.

と題してみたが、正直ＢＬって言い方は嫌いｗとはいえ、使い勝手はいいのでとりあえず。
一見してみて、'01年公開「同級生」を思い出す。この作品から12年もあとに作られているにしてはとてもデジャヴ尽くし。というより、基本的にティーンのゲイ事情をとりまく世界に変化はみられない、ってだけなのかもしれない。
16歳のガブリエルは夏休みの勉強合宿？で出会ったマーカスと親しくなり、クラブで酔っ払ったあとキスをする。も、合宿は終わり２人は住所交換もせずに別れてしまう。ガブリエルは動揺抱えたまま友達・家族のいる家に帰るが、家では相変わらず支配的な母親が恋人と離婚した父親を交えウザイ。テディは恋人とつかず離れずを繰り返し両名とも愚痴る。ステラはうるさい祖母から逃れるようにコンビニで仕事を始めるがいきなり強盗にあったりして、同僚のロシア人ミトロヴィッチに助けられたり。グレタは奔放な母親が自宅で乱痴気騒ぎをするので出て行きたいが資金がなく、目下お悩み中。そんな中ガブリエルは偶然にもマーカスと再会し、連絡を取り合うようになる。ある夜のパーティでなんとなく良い雰囲気になるか？と思われたが、マーカスに友人と紹介されたララという少女とのセックスを見てしまい、ショックを受けるガブリエル。そうこうするうちに友人グループたちの問題も表面化・展開激しくなって…。
かように、青春真っ只中の少年少女たちが疾風怒濤に若さを謳歌しまくる映画である。
毒と歪みとリリカルさをガス・ヴァン・サントから抜いたらできあがりました、とでもいおうか。いや、決して悪いと言ってるのではなく、要はとっても予測可能ということなんである。
このDVDには国内用と海外用のトレイラーが２種入っているのだけど、両方見るととても同じ映画のものとはちょっと思えない編集で苦笑できるのだ。国内向けはちゃんと、主旨に近しいシリアス面を多く取り入れているのに対し、海外向けは十代の飲酒とセックスとそして死という、何か既存のものをお手本にしたような派手目のクリップになっていて、商売ってのはこういうことなのねｗなんて思わされた。
まぁあまり作品と関係ないことだが、作りはいたって真面目だし、現代家族の崩壊習慣とか十代の自殺、セクシュアリティの自覚といった問題提起は決して目新しくはないまでも、常に作られなければ問題として扱ってくれないのが現代社会ではあるので、方法論としては新しくないまでもアイスランドで制作されたということがまず重要なんだと思う。（何しろ日本では俎板にものぼらないテーマであるし）
それはともかく、このボーイズラブ（もうこれでいいや）映画的見所は、北欧アイスランド製か、（勝手に断定するけど）本家のガス・ヴァン・サントをも凌ぐ美々しいキャスティングで目に眩しいことこの上ない。友達はもちろんその親とその知人にいたるまで、何故か皆モデル並に美形。それがまた非現実・非日常感を増長させてるから感情移入が難しいのもあって、ちょっと勿体無い。いや、美しい少年少女＆大人たちは見てて本当に良いものなんだけど、、、なんだけどもその、そこらへんはgleeを経たクリエイターが持ってしかるべきリアリティを少しなおざりにしちゃってんのかも？と思わざるをえなかった。まぁこのへんはコテコテの極東人がｇｄｇｄ言ってもハァ？で流されていい与太レベル言いがかりだからひとつスルーでｗ
ただ、家族や社会に反抗したいイマドキ16歳ながらも、主人公ガブリエルを好もしく見せているのは、やっぱりその「年相応」であり、17歳でも15歳でもない「ピュアネス」（恥ずいなあｗ）だったりする。マークスと少女の濡れ場を見てショックを受け独りで涙を流したり、みずから命を絶った親友のためにこっそりと墓へ一輪の薔薇を手向け、自分のせいで孫が死に打ちのめされている彼女の祖母に寄り添ってあげたり。そう、ガブリエルはとっても「イイ子」で、もうそれだけでこの作品は完成してるんだと思った。
自分がゲイであることを自覚したティーンを、せめて虚構では肯定的・魅力的に描く。簡単そうでなかなか実現に至っていない現実を思うと、こうした絵空事の重要性がその他愛もない軽やかな作風のありがたみとして（勝手に）再確認できる。これって意外とスゴイのかもしれない。無邪気かもしれないが浅くはないんだぞ、っていう16歳たちならではの金字塔的表明、なんつって。
Jittersという英題を辞書でひくと、イライラするひと、物事なんだそうで、そこまで切羽詰ってもないよなあ？という鑑賞後の印象は失礼かもしれないけど、実は案外そんな受け取り方の擦れ違いで見る側をイライラさせるって意味？みたいに深読みしてしまい、我ながら無駄考察してるなぁなんぞと思ってやまないｗ
余談２ながら、ガブリエル役のAtli Oskar Fjalarsson（読めない）はそれこそ「同級生」主演のベン・シルバーストン似で、彼が恋したマーカス役Haraldur Ari Stef'nsson（これまた読めない）は同郷サッカーヒーロー＝エイデュル・グジョンセンかジェイミー・キャンベル＝バウワーかって美少年で、近年見たゲイテーマ映画ではダントツ（死語？）の美麗キャストだったと付け加えておく。冒頭とラストにある拙くたどたどしいキスシーンが実にキュート。
言語は当然アイスランド語なので英語字幕付いてますし、台詞がものすごく平易なので英語が苦手でもストーリーを追う難しさはさほど感じられないと思われます。やっぱり同年代の若いひとたちに見てもらいたいラブリーな一本。

Alright coming of age LGBT film. It's a genre I like, not the best film in the genre but pretty good. It's partly set in Manchester, which attracted my attention, but I didn't see any scenes actually in Manchester. I suspect they didn't film in Manchester but that isn't crucial to the story anyway.

Teenager gets sent for a semester to England to a posh school to learn English. At school he develops feelings for his roomate. One drunken night they kiss. I guess they must coincidentally live in the same village because back in their home country they meet again, he works in the local hair dressers. Bit of a plot hole that - it's not explained why they're both coincidentally from the same village and only first met in England.
