I think many people can agree with me that the Pokemon anime has lost the same kind of magic it once had when the series first came into conception almost 20 years ago. Much of that magic can be attributed to the late original screenwriter for the show, Takeshi Shudo. His themes, while noticeably dark and adult-like in nature, really made his work stand out as something to be admired. Shudo was not afraid to add a tinge of realism into his writing, even in a show aimed for children like Pokemon. But like all creative writers, Shudo was bound by some form of censorship, whether it was determined that his idea wouldn't sell well or was too "bizarre" for children to understand.
That is where the radio drama comes in.
Shudo was the sole writer of the drama and it is clear he had much more creative freedom in this work than anything else that he has made. This drama, which was produced and aired in the weeks preceding the release of the first Pokemon movie in Japan, was blatantly reflective of the ethical discourse of its time, having a fitting focus on the topic of cloning. The drama does not shy away from tackling the topic head-on and even take a stance on the matter.
People will often say they detest "politics" or "real-world" messages in their fiction, but I would argue it is the kind of works that hit so close to home that really hooks us in. That being said, because the drama is not afraid to draw you into some pretty adult-themes, this is by far one of the darkest pieces of Pokemon media you will ever encounter. What you are bracing yourself for does not contain a happy ending.
As for the product itself, unfortunately the audio is all in Japanese. There are translations floating around YouTube and Google but without those a possible language barrier may keep you from fully enjoying the drama. Nevertheless, the voice acting from the cast is absolutely superb and you can definitely hear and feel the emotion regardless if you understand the language. The art book included with the CD is absolutely gorgeous but since I got mine used (which is what you will most likely get as well since this product has been long out of print) I had to be very careful with the packaging. As if that wasn't enough, the package even includes the official soundtrack to the original Japanese version of the film.
Overall I highly recommend this product and is a must for any die-hard Pokemon fan.
