Connected Products Demystified: Everything a manager should know before embracing a connected product, smart home, or IoT project. (English Edition) Formato Kindle
How to successfully take on a connected products project — even if you’ve never heard of the term before.
Are you thinking of a career in tech?
Do you want to stand out from all the other managers out there?
How would you like to lead a team that respects you for your leadership and your expertise?
If you are already a manager of a connected products project (or if you’d like to be), then this may be the best news you read all day.
On the other hand, if you want to be a manager in a tech company… but don’t have the right technical skills… These words could save you a ton of money on certification courses (and heartache).
When most people think of tech-oriented managers — like the “top” product managers you read about on LinkedIn — they’re really talking about Ivy League grads and startup veterans.
Statistically speaking, only the top 2% of product managers in the US have what it takes to be Chief Product Officers, based on job data from Zippia.
However, even the top CPOs in Big Tech know that it’s not enough to have graduated from top schools, and very few have any actual experience with movements like connected products.
They know that no matter what kind of manager you are, you must also have strong technical expertise that’s on top of all the latest trends in tech. Otherwise, it’s not much fun to manage a connected products project if you don’t know how it works.
Of course, building that level of expertise takes time.
But what if you could skip over having to learn about all technical bits and pieces of today’s technology by pioneering tomorrow’s tech trend?
Something that tech magazine WIRED calls “Far Bigger Than Anyone Realizes”:
Internet of Things or IoT.
The great news is you don’t need to be a developer or go back to school to gain a skills advantage with IoT and Connected Products… and maybe upgrade your negotiating power, too.
Everything you need to know starts here.
In Connected Products Demystified, you will discover:
- The 7 most common forms of IoT that have “taken over”
- The 4 key aspects that a product manager needs to develop a workable, smart connected product strategy
- The formula Steve Blank uses to create Unique Value Propositions for his startups
- The 4 capabilities to look out for when picking an IoT deployment platform — ask these 10 questions
- Why these types of connected devices aren’t so “smart”
- A 12-point checklist for all the factors that need to be considered when creating an IoT solution
- 8 ways that IoT products are redefining traditional UX design principles
- How Google has managed to turn the smoke alarm into an “exotic experience” with this IoT device
- What Industry 4.0 is, and the 6 IoT applications that will completely change the way we work
And much more.
Even if you’re not a data scientist or any kind of technical expert… within the first few chapters of this book… you’ll quickly pick up on why 9 in 10 senior executives in tech industries think IoT is “critical” to their businesses.
While you might not become a CPO after reading Connected Products Demystified, you’ll see why understanding IoT now will set your career up for a successful future.

In the first chapter some key points about product strategies to be aware of are gradually introduced and explained. Then, in the second chapter, key differences about smart devices versus connected devices are clearly explained to clear the field before a deep dive on good product definition strategies and tricks, and related product value definition, addressed in the third chapter.
A very useful compendium of IoT platform enabling technologies are discussed in the 4th chapter, disserting both base and advanced topics. Maybe it's the book's most relevant chapter thanks to the included up to dated information.
In Chapter 5 an interesting point of view and related valued advice on HW platform selection, based on author's direct day-by-day experience, are presented.
In Chapter 6 and 7 two important topics are addressed: operations and monitoring on one side, and cybersecurity on the other side, that in many cases are strictly coupled and the related impact often underestimated.
Chapter 9 includes a very interesting dissertation on user experience and its challenges to define and deliver a successful IoT based product.
In the end a greatly recommended book to whom is interested to find in a single publication a valuable set of useful advice and information on a complex and, strange as it may seem at the expense of its popularity, still unknown topic
Finally a book that tells you what IoT can bring to your company, without being too technical, and giving you a solid background and good insights on IoT world and how it impact on a company product making process and organization.
Waiting for the sequel on each industry sector!
We all hear everyday news and information around Connected Product, IoT and the risks associated but it is really difficult to have a clear picture of the opportunities and the issues brought by this technologies. This is the main return I got in reading it.
I was amazed by how many ideas came to my mind for my business after reading it!
