I bought this album in 1963 when it came out. It is one of the best albums you can buy and Lonnie Mack is an amazing guitarist. I was in the 10th grade and playing guitar for about half a year at the time. Remember it's 1963 there was no YouTube, Video or any other form to copy or learn from someone else visibly you used your ears. You did it on your own or had a teacher and learned to read music or slowed the record down on a reel to reel tape copy to get the licks. It's easier to learn today with all the technology. This is a prize album in my collection. If you like blues, rock, gospel, instrumental and a smoking guitarist then this album is for you. There is a newer version which has more songs that did not appear on this original release back in 1963. It is a great one as well and well worth owning. It is called "For Collectors Only" and is the same exact sessions but more tracks. I own both because I wanted the original cover and release version and the other because of the extra tracks. Two of which are Chicken Pickin' & Farther On Down The Road. Every guitarist should own this but I imagine most really good guitarist have owned it for years and years! Find out where the great guitar licks came from back in 1963! Lonnie Mack WAS The Man when these sessions went down. Everyone NEEDS this Album! *********************Electrifying***********************
I'd be the first to admit I don't know "that" much about music, but as the old Genesis song goes, "I know what I like." Lonnie Mack is really an overlooked gem of talent. I was only familiar with "Wham" and "Memphis" & to be honest I was surprised to hear him singing on this - but what a voice! More than a little gospel influenced, Lonnie managed to create a smoky mix of the different genres of the early 60's. I'm glad I discovered him along with Dick Dale and Link Wray. I'm more than delighted!
Lonnie Mack was one of the under appreciated musicians of the 60s. Much of his career was under the radar, except for those who discovered him or heard him play.
